Understanding Male Domestic Abuse
Domestic abuse in England & Wales is a hidden epidemic: in the year ending March 2023, 751,000 men aged 16+ experienced domestic abuse—about 3 in 100 of all men—and one in seven men will suffer abuse at some point in their lives. Yet societal stigma, service gaps, and outdated stereotypes leave many survivors isolated and unheard.
The Scale of the Crisis
- 751,000 men aged 16+ experienced abuse in the year ending March 2023 (CSEW, ONS)
- 712,000 men experienced abuse in the year ending March 2024, showing the problem remains pervasive.
- 27.5% of all domestic abuse–related crimes reported in 2023/24 were by male victims, underscoring a silent surge of male-reported incidents
Barriers to Speaking Out
- 49% of male survivors never tell anyone they’re being abused, compared with 19% of women, trapping them in silence
- Only 6.3% of high-risk domestic abuse cases discussed at MARACs involve male victims, reflecting under-identification in multi-agency risk processes
- Just 13.5% of IDVA clients are men, despite comprising roughly one-third of all victims—highlighting a gap in specialist support
- 11% of male victims have considered taking their own life due to partner abuse, a tragic indicator of unaddressed trauma
